Overcome Test Anxiety to Pass The BAR

Overcome Test Anxiety to Pass General Tests

Test Anxiety is real.  The fear and stress of taking a major test such as passing the BAR or Real Estate Exam, becoming a Court Reporter or CPA, causes us to react with with the fight or flight syndrome.  Adrenaline courses through our body causing the muscles to shake and clench.  We forget to breathe.  Our ability to process information is impeded, and our IQ drops by 10%.

Wow!  Who needs that when you're taking an important test?

Well, anxiety is really excitement...like bungee jumping.   The suggestions I use in these CDs and tapes teaches you how to bring your excitement down to a level you can manage to prevent you from the adrenaline rush of fight or flight.  Using the correct relaxation techniques will allow you to breathe and relax your muscles on your command.

Following the relaxation management techniques is a very powerful visualization of you passing your test.  Then, finally, I will guide you through an amazing hypnosis session where you will see yourself taking and passing your test using all of these new skills and going on to achieve a very successful career.

There are different CDs for each different test because the skills needed are different for each test.  I am constantly adding to this list of tests.

TEST ANXIETY – WHY DO WE HAVE IT

AND HOW CAN WE CONQUER IT?

Test anxiety is nervousness which is really excitement.  We like excitement.  That’s why we bungie jump, race, sky dive and go on roller coaster rides.  It’s thrilling.  We like it.  But you can’t imagine purposely taking a written test under those circumstances, can you? Nervousness is natural.  It means you are excited. Adrenaline floods your body.   Your heart beats faster.  Your palms sweat.  You tremble.  Your mouth gets dry.  You’re alert and ready to take off or fight.

To conquer test anxiety, you must first learn how to take your excitement level down a notch so you can process incoming information.  You must learn how to manage your excitement.  And I go into this in detail in the CD.

The purpose of the Overcome Test Anxiety CD is to give you some tools to use to be able to relax your muscles and your mind at will and to use positive messages to create success.  If you haven’t taken part in a guided visualization or guided meditation before, then you are in for a pleasant experience.

As a hypnotist and stress management consultant who knows the power of thought, let me share with you a couple of phrases to keep in mind.

What is expected tends to be realized.

What you say to yourself about yourself in private is what you become.

Thoughts become things.  Choose the good ones. (As Mike Dooley at www.tut.com says)

I’d like you to accept the idea that the mind cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined.  If I ask you to close your eye and imagine pressing down and rolling a lemon on a table, then cutting the lemon in half and biting into it with the juices running down your fingers, you may experience a tightness in the glands in your mouth.  Fear and stress can cause hives, sweating, upset stomach and numerous other physical symptoms.  We tend to react to our fears as though they are real rather than just a thought form.  Most of our fears rarely come to pass.

Your conscious mind takes up only 10% of your mental power.  The subconscious mind is 90% of your mind power.  The subconscious can be an evil twin that tells you that you’re not good enough or worthy enough to be successful. It can constantly bombard you with fear and doubt.   You think about  50,000 thoughts per second, and many of those thoughts are negative.  And you also think these same thoughts each and every day.  If we neglect to implant positive thoughts, desires and emotions, the subconscious mind will fill in the void with negative thoughts.  We create our lives from our thoughts.

We each have a critical factor that we develop around the age of eight.  It teaches us to consciously discern and evaluate what we are told.  Before the age of  8, we, as children, pretty much accept what we are told about ourselves.  When something is told to us over and over again with emotion attached, be come to accept it as a true belief.

And even when we are past the age of 8, those beliefs still run our life all the way through adulthood. Parents may tell us,” Why can’t you ever finish what you start.  You never follow through on anything.  You’re never going to amount to anything.”  “You’re stupid,” “you’re spoiled rotten,” “you’re a dreamer.  Get your head out of the clouds.”  They tell us we are not enough of this or that.  Let’s call these feelings our Ground of Being.  We all have these early beliefs about ourselves.  It might be that you feel you are undeserving or that you’re not good enough, or feel you are unlovable, or carry around an uneasy guilt or blame.

This applies to all of us.  We’ve all been programmed in our childhood to have certain negative beliefs about our self.  This is what causes bigotry and religious wars.  You know you have the confidence and skill level to pass these upcoming tests.  So how come you have fear when you take the test?  You see what I mean.

So what do we do?  We use that fantastic 10% of your conscious mind and we REPROGRAM OURSELVES.  And we can be enormously successful at doing it.  It’s become fashionable today to visualize being successful.  Athletes use this tool all the time.  You need to keep reminding yourself consciously that you know you have the confidence and skill level to pass your tests and exams.  Also, think of the many tests and exams you have passed and keep that feeling with you.  Did you know that the Blue Angle pilots always sit together for one half hour before each show, close their eyes, and fly their planes in their minds?

A friend of mine runs marathon races with a few of her friends.  She was always consistently finishing the races one-half hour earlier than her friends, and they were all perplexed about it because it seemed they were pretty equal in their fitness.  One day at lunch they started to discuss this ability of my friend.  Finally she asked them “what are you thinking about when you run?”  “I hope I can hang in there and finish the race,” was their answer.  “Not me,” she replied.  “I can hardly wait to get over the finish line and get this race over!” Just one small shift in thought.  Amazing.

Hypnosis and guided meditation or visualizations are similar in that they create a trance effect that bypasses this critical factor.  There are other physical symptoms that appear, but I don’t need to go into that today.  In trance you are highly suggestible and all five physical senses are more acute

Let me dispel some fears about hypnosis or deep relaxation.  People are afraid because they feel someone will control them.  They fear they won’t come out of hypnosis or trance.  The trance state is a natural state. Have you ever been driving on the freeway and missed your exit because your mind was elsewhere?  That’s trance.  Nobody can control you because you are always in control.  That’s why all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  You are merely allowing a guide like me to steer you into seeing your own visualizations.  If there’s an emergency, you can come out of trance in a second.  If you don’t like the process or the person doing it, you can come right out of it.  No one can make you do something against your will.  You choose to accept only those suggestions that are beneficial to you.    The Overcome Test Anxiety CD will take you into a deep relaxation, then deepen it just a bit to take you into visualization.

My main goal is to help you relieve stress before and during your tests. You are an achiever. You’re ready to step forward into a new, exciting and lucrative career.  If you have come this far, most of you have mastered your self talk at least as it relates to your career.  So I’m going to give you some methods to relax and loosen up before and during your test.

Do you have stiff arms and fingers during a test?  Did you know that stress lowers your IQ by 10 points?  Did you know that when you are stressed you can lift a feather and a salt shaker and they both feel like they weigh the same?  You lose your sensitivity, and your ability to process information is impaired.  The main problem with tension is we don’t think.  Tension cuts off information from coming into our mind and body.  The hormone that is produced by tension causes our hands to shake and sweat.  Blood flows to our arms and legs and away from our brain. Too much stress can produce harmful chemical immune suppressants.

The single most important thing you can do during a test is breathe.  With an inadequate supply of oxygen you become stressed.  Inspiration means full of enthusiasm, inspired.  Expiration means to expire or die.

Breathing is an excellent tranquilizer.

You can do it anywhere.

You can never overdose on air.

It’s free.

You’re going to do it anyway.

Next, you must bring moisture into your mouth.    It’s very important when you are stressed to keep your mouth moist.  Think of a lemon and bring saliva into your mouth or suck on a mint.

Relaxing releases immune building chemicals into your body. So right before you take your tests, you need to watch your self talk.  Get that feeling of expectancy.  Remember what is expected tends to be realized.  Expect to pass.  Think of the many tests you have passed and keep that feeling with you.  You have been succeeding over and over again.  Remember that you know you have the confidence and skill level to pass this test.   Then bring your excitement level down a notch, (Listen to the CD to learn how to do this.)  Remember to breathe.  Bring saliva into your mouth to moisten it.

Don’t ever use the word “try.”  The word “try” implies failure.

The CD will show you how to relax the tension from your muscles and mind then deepen the relaxation state and take you into a light trance state where you will be able to visualize yourself successfully passing your tests.

Just think of how much of your energy goes into keeping your muscles tense and tight.
